Our Definitive Guide To Paper Finishes, Weights & Sizes

Our custom printed products are available in a wide choice of different paper sizes, finishes and weights. With so many options to choose from, ordering print can sometimes be a little overwhelming. That's why we've created this definitive guide to our papers. If you don't know your GSMs from your Microns, or your DLs from your A0s, we're about to reveal all...

Standard Paper Finishes

Most of our products are available in three different paper finishes:

Gloss: Gloss paper features a china clay coating which - as its name suggests - results in a smooth, shiny finish. Printed colours tend to appear vibrant and eye-catching.

Silk: These semi-gloss papers also feature a china clay coating, so sit somewhere between gloss and matt.

Matt: Our matt papers are uncoated so are more porous than gloss or semi-gloss paper. Printed colours are relatively subtle and warm.

Your choice of paper often boils down to personal preference. However, it's worth noting that uncoated paper is a good choice if you intend to overprint or write on your printed items.

Specialist Paper Finishes

Our Leaflets, Flyers, Invitations, Save The Date Cards, Announcement Cards, Greetings Cards and Certificates are also available in a choice of specialist luxury papers:

Conqueror Wove Cream: Made from 25% cotton fibres, Conqueror Wove has a subtle cream colour and a delightful soft textured finish.

Woodstock Betulla Pulp: Made from 80% recycled materials and 20% chlorine free fibres, Woodstock Betulla Pulp is eco friendly and perfect if you're after a natural look. The defining characteristics of this gorgeous paper are the small fibres and grains of wood pulp which run throughout the sheet.

Mohawk Felt Cream: A heavily textured stock, with a slightly off-white, cream shade, it oozes sophistication. Please be aware that, due to its heavy texture, the printed image can appear slightly mottled so is best suited to relatively simple designs with limited areas of solid colour.

Tintoretto by Fedrigoni: Slightly less textured than Mohawk Felt Cream, Tintoretto features felt-marks on both sides of the sheet, giving it a soft-touch effect, similar to artist's paper. It's therefore the perfect choice for designs featuring hand drawn or watercolour illustrations.

Pearlised Ice Gold: Finally, something a little different. Ice Gold features a pearlescent finish and a slight golden sheen that sparkles like glitter in the light.

Recycled Papers

If you like to do your bit for the environment, browse our recycled range which features smooth, white, 100% recycled papers in a choice of different weights. These high quality matt papers are superb quality and indistinguishable from standard uncoated stocks.

If you're looking for something a little more rustic, consider our 100% recycled Kraft range. This earthy brown stock is an ideal choice if you're after a retro, handmade look.

Paper Weights

The weight of paper is usually measured in grams per square metre (GSM). Generally speaking, the heavier the paper, the more sturdy it feels.

100gsm - 120gsm paper is recommended for letterheads and compliment slips.

150gsm - 170gsm is perfect for leaflets, while 250gsm - 300gsm is commonly used for nightclub flyers.

Thick 400gsm is the ideal choice for business cards.

Paper Sizes

Most people order print using standard "A" sizes:

A7: 74 x 105mm

A6: 105 x 148mm

A5: 148 x 210mm

A4: 210 x 297mm (the size of a standard UK letterhead)

A3: 297 x 420mm

A2: 420 x 594mm

A1: 594 x 841mm

A0: 841 x 1189mm

In addition, DL (99 x 210mm or ⅓ of A4) is a popular size, often used for leaflets, flyers and compliment slips.

As well as all the standard sizes, we're often able to supply our products in a custom size of your choice.
