A magazine that’s going to be picked up and read regularly needs to work just as well in print as it does on screen. Paper choice plays a big part in that. Photography and illustrations can benefit from a smoother finish, while an independent zine or text-heavy publication might suit something more natural. A heavier cover can also give the finished magazine a little more weight.
It’s worth thinking about where it’s going to end up too. Something being handed out at an event might need a different approach to a magazine that’s posted out and read from cover to cover. The number of pages, paper you choose and overall finish all change how it feels in someone’s hands.
